Lake District Cottages - Monkhouse Hill - Environment

environment

Footpath repair supported by Monkhouse Hill   Here at Monkhouse Hill Cottages we recognise our responsibility to operate in an environmentally responsible manner in all aspects of our business.

In 2007 we became one of the first accommodation providers in Cumbria to receive the Green Tourism Business Scheme Silver award, following a rigorous assessment of all our environmental policies and practices.

As a member of the Lake District Tourism and Conservation Partnership, Monkhouse Hill raises funds for high level footpath renewal in the Lakes (through the 'Fix the Fells' programme) and red squirrel preservation projects (through 'Red Alert'). You will be invited to contribute to these on your departure.

Red squirrel preservation supported by Monkhouse Hill   All cleaning products, both used by staff and provided to cottage guests, are natural and biodegradable. We recycle glass bottles, newspapers and cardboard and cans  through separate bins in the refuse store.

Energy efficient lighting is used in all external areas and for most internal lights - except where such would not provide a sufficiently bright light.. Thermostatic heating controls are installed in all the cottages, with a default setting that minimises energy use whilst allowing occupants full flexibility to override to suit their needs. Payment for energy use on departure is intended to discourage indiscriminate wastage.

Cumbrian food from Dalemain   As many products and services as possible are sourced from the Northern Fells area, therefore supporting the local economy. This currently includes hampers, local cooperative beers, arrival cakes, restaurant meals, frozen meals, celebratory catering, cleaning, gardening and maintenance. Guests are actively encouraged to visit local attractions and pubs and restaurants, full details of which are provided in the specially produced guides. Walking and cycling in the immediate area are promoted in a similar way, including provision of a bike hire service.
