pre-school special

With a young family ourselves, we've tried to offer a wide range of extras to make sure that your stay is safer, less hassle and more fun.

The basics - wooden cots (with duvet or blankets), highchairs, and stairgates - can all be booked in advance and set up for your arrival.

Order a box of traditional  children's toys (from three age ranges) to collect when you arrive - no charge, just a deposit. There is also a good range of family games in each cottage.

We also have a great adventure playground with swings, tower, rope frame, slide, tunnel and suspension bridge. The playground is for children aged from about 2 to 9.

All cottages come complete with digital television with video and DVD players. Free access to a large collection of books, videos and DVDs (with lots of childrens titles) is available.

All the family will enjoy the indoor Games Room, with full size table tennis, pool and table football - and the unique 'digger and dozer' construction site.

Don't forget that you have full free of charge access to the fantastic facilities at the North Lakes Spa in Penrith with swimming and paddling pools and a games room with Nintendo Wii and air hockey.

Our most popular pre-school cottage is Miller Moss (chosen to feature in Cumbria Tourism's 2008 national marketing campaign, above right) - lots of space, double and twin bedrooms adjacent with space in either for a cot, practical yet stylish furnishings...and great value.

Don't worry if you run out of space in the car - our 'baby and toddler rescue cupboard' contains just about everything you could think of - baby monitor sets, nightlights, bed protectors, baby bath, potty, playpen, backpack carrier, pushchair, bouncy chair, fireguards and lots more. All can be borrowed free of charge (subject to availability)

Get the kids to bed, then 'eat out' in your cottage from one of our Pre-Arrival Order Service menus. Or let us arrange a babysitter for you to really escape.

Not far from Monkhouse Hill are a wide variety of Lake District themed wildlife attractions and working farms, including Trotters World of  Animals and the Lakeland Sheep and Wool Centre in Cockermouth.

The Lakes are a great place to introduce children to real walking - we have plenty of books with family walks, round lakes or across gentle fells.

Indoor venues well worth a visit (also for  adults) are the 'Cars of the Stars' motor museum in Keswick,  Wetheriggs (have a go yourself) Pottery near Penrith,  the Puzzling Place in Keswick, the Rum Story in Whitehaven, Tullie House Museum in Carlisle and Rheged Discovery Centre.

Take a pleasure boat trip with Ullswater Steamers, the kids will love the narrow guage  Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway  horse riding and other more adventurous activities are available at Rookin House Farm.
