Environmental Practices

Green Tourism Scheme

We aim to operate in an environmentally responsible manner in all aspects of our business.
We were amongst the first in Cumbria to receive the Green Tourism Silver award, following a rigorous assessment of all our environmental policies and practices. Since 2011 we have received the Gold award, the highest possible.

Environmentally friendly products

All cleaning products, both used by staff and provided freely to cottage guests, are natural and biodegradable. This also ensures natural functioning of the site’s septic tank system.
All loo paper provided is from fully recycled source.
Fairtrade products are also used for your welcome afternoon tea.

Recycling

We recycle glass bottles, newspapers and cardboard and cans through separate bins in the refuse store. We hope to arrange separate plastic collection in the near future.
Guests are provided with mini-compost boxes for fruit and vegetable cuttings which are then used to make compost for the courtyard planted areas.

Supporting the Local Economy

Many products and services are sourced from the Northern Fells, so supporting the local economy. This includes hampers, beers, cakes, restaurant and frozen meals, catering, cleaning, gardening and maintenance.
Guests are actively encouraged to visit local attractions and pubs and restaurants.
