Whilst staying at Monkkhouse Hill, we often recommend to our guests a meal at The Dog and Gun in Skelton village.

So we were very delighted to see that MICHELIN Guide have included them as a new entrant into their 2019 Bib Gourmand awards. Named after Bibendum — aka the Michelin Man — the coveted Bib Gourmand award highlights restaurants which offer good quality, good value cooking.

"Prices and value for money are important, but the Bib Gourmand is about much more," says Rebecca Burr, director of the MICHELIN Guide Great Britain & Ireland. "It's about the ethos and philosophy of a restaurant. The Michelin inspectors love finding new Bib Gourmands and they're always hugely popular with our readers."

So well done to The Dog and Gun - make sure you pay them a visit next time you stay with us (but I think that booking well ahead is going to be even more essential now that this little local gem has received national publicity).

On the subject of eating and drinking, you will want to pay a visit to ‘The Old Crown’ in nearby Hesket Newmarket during your stay.

Twenty years ago 120 of us came together to create Britain’s first cooperative pub, which has since formed the model for nearly a hundred other community-owned pubs up and down the country.

The Old Crown is probably the only one with a cooperatively owned microbrewery next door though – guaranteeing that a superb range of real ales is always available. The same beers are also available in bottles at Monkhouse Hill.
